Botanical Pest Control - Environmentally Friendly EcoSmart
As part of our continuing commitment to leaving a minimal impact on our environment, we are proud to offer botanical EcoSmart product line in our ECO-GREEN program.
Unique and Patented Mode-Of-Action
EcoSMART’s plant oil active ingredients target and block a key neurotransmitter receptor site called octopamine, which is found only in invertebrates (i.e. insects).
Unprecedented Margin-of-Safety
Mammals do not have receptors for octopamine, so EcoSMART’s plant oils have no adverse effect on them. Additionally, many of the plant oils used are classified as “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) and/or are approved for food and beverage consumption by the U.S. FDA.
Effective Against a Broad Spectrum of Insect Pests
EcoSMART’s products provide quick knockdown and control against a wide variety of indoor and outdoor pests.
Attactive Fragrances
Because the active ingredient is comprised of plant essential oils, there may be a “floral/botanical” fragrance associated with some of EcoSMART’s products. This fragrance is not harmful and will dissipate after a short period of time.
As a Pest Management Professional, we are constantly striving to improve our service by Utilizing the latest technology available. We proudly use products from EcoSmart Technologies which Contain a patented blend of botanical oils that effectively targets a broad spectrum of pests… Not people or pets

After over a decade of research, EcoSMART developed revolutionary combinations of efficacious insecticidal plant essential oils that offer botanical based alternatives to conventional pesticides. The active ingredients in EcoSMART’s products are unique, synergistic blends of essential oils, many of which are classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and approved as direct food additives.
Q: How can EcoSMART’s active ingredient target insects, and not people or pets?
EcoSMART’s plant oils have a unique mode of action that targets a key neurotransmitter receptor called octopamine which is found in all invertebrates (i.e. insects), but not in mammals.Octopamine regulates an insect’s heart rate, movement and metabolism. Interrupting the function of octopamine results in a total breakdown of the insect’s nervous system.
Q: Are you aware of any pest resistance issues associated with your botanical active ingredient?
Unlike conventional, synthetic active ingredients, there are noknown pest resistance issues associated with botanical oils.
Q: Are the botanical oils EcoSMART uses more effective on certain insects versus others?
The plant oils EcoSMART uses in their active ingredient are effective against a broad spectrum of insects, since its unique mode of action targets a neuroreceptor that is present in all insects!
Q: I noticed some of the EcoEXEMPT® products have a fragrance. Why is that and how long before the fragrance dissipates after treatment?
The plant oils used in EcoEXEMPT® products are inherently fragrant. These include rosemary, wintergreen, thyme oil and eugenol, to name a few. These plant oil ingredients are permitted by the EPA to qualify as an exempt pesticide (requires no federal EPA registration). It is important to inform customers that the fragrance is not harmful in any way.
Depending on the environment, i.e. humidity, moisture, exposure to ultra violet light (sun light), temperature, soil micro organisms, etc. the fragrance should dissipate in a few hours. In damp protected environments such as basements or in areas with little air flow, it may take several days for the fragrance to completely dissipate.
In the rare instance where the fragrance lingers longer than a couple of days, you can use Febreeze® to address this issue.
Q: Can any of EcoSMART products be used around waterways?
EcoEXEMPT® IC can be used around waterways since it is non-toxic to fish and breaks down in water within 24 hours.
Q: Are EcoSMART products only for use in sensitive and/or organic accounts?
No. While EcoSMART products work great for sensitive and organic accounts, they are designed to work in virtually all accounts since they are comparable to conventional pesticides in terms of efficacy…but with the safety benefits of botanical products.
Q: I understand 2-Phenethyl Propionate (PEP) is derived from peanut oil.I’m allergic to peanuts and peanut products. Will I react to PEP?
People who demonstrate allergies to peanuts and peanut products will not be affected by PEP.Peanut allergies result from certain amino acids found in peanuts.PEP is derived from components of peanut oil which do not contain those amino acids.
Q: Why is it recommended to use an adjuvant with EcoEXEMPT® IC?
The adjuvant acts as an emulsifier allowing EcoEXEMPT IC to completely mix with water and help keep it in solution.Adjuvants are very easy to use and generally inexpensive.A little bit goes a long way.
Q: Botanical products have been around a long time, are typically short-lived (no residual), more expensive and moredifficult to use.How do EcoSMART’s botanical products differ from other botanicals?
The major difference between EcoSMART’s botanical products and other botanicals is that we use a synergized blend of plant oils as our active ingredient, not a single botanical oil. This synergistic effect increases the insecticidal activity of the plant oils, enabling our botanical products to perform comparably to conventional products in terms of effectiveness, residual, ease-of-use, and treatment cost while maintaining the lowest environmental and mammalian toxicity possible. This difference is so unique to EcoSMART, it is patented.
Q: Does EcoSMART offer any technical or marketing support?

Q: The EcoPCO® “X” products use pyrethrin as one of the botanical components.Pyrethrin has been used for decades as an active. What makes EcoPCO® “X” products different from other py-based products?
Py-based products only provide a contact kill. That is, they have knockdown and kill properties, but no residual activity. Pyrethrin also requires the addition of a synergist, typically piperonyl butoxide (PBO), to prevent the insect from metabolizing the py.
The unique blend of EcoSMART’s plant oils and pyrethrins eliminates the necessity PBO to synergize the pyrethrins. These plant oils also have a totally unique mode of action from pyrethrin thus providing a “dual” mode of action by attacking different portions of the insect’s nervous system simultaneously.
But most importantly, the synergistic effect realized when combining EcoSMART’s plant oils and pyrethrin results in a technological breakthrough unique to EcoPCO® “X” products. For the first time ever, EcoSMART has developed a line of py-based products that provide residual performance comparable to conventional pesticides…and without the fragrance commonly associated with botanicals.
EcoEXEMPT® Products - These versatile products quailfy as exempt from Federal registration. All EcoEXEMPT® products are USDA NOP (National Organic Program) compliant. The performance and application costs are comparable to conventional synthetic pesticides or herbicides, and have a pleasant botanical fragrance.
